    Winter Disc Golf Apparel 

    For those of you that brave the snow during the winter months, what exactly do you wear to combat the snow and cold? Personally for me, I wear Under Armour cold gear tights and top, Darn Tough merino wool socks, a dri fit long sleeve, and short sleeve, followed by jeans and a warm hoody. I also wear an Outdoor Research baklava hat,mittens, and gators. This winter I’m looking for a warmer layer that goes on top of my base layer. I’ve talked to a couple friends on Twitter, @playrecords and @inourdr and they recommend Marmot wind proof shell, and Patagonia base layers. They also recommended North Face pants instead of jeans.

    I know this topic get’s brought up every year, and gear changes from season to season. I’m curious to see what all of you have to say on the subject.

    Putting slump 

    When you are going through a funk, what are some of the ways you push through it? Lately my putting has found itself in a terrible deep dark place with no light. I won’t bore you with how bad it is, but let’s just say 5-10′ putts are my most missed, and I concentrate put down my mini AND do my normal routine.

    Usually if I’ve having a driving slump, I’ll grab my bag and head over to the soccer fields and iron out the details. I know the absolute best way to diagnose/fix is filming yourself, unfortunately I don’t have that luxury. I still practice putting roughly 3-4 hours a week. I know that’s not a lot, but it’s better then nothing.

    Worlds Warm Up 

    My close friends and I took the trip from Michigan to Charlotte,NC for my bachelor party the first week in June. The weather on the drive down was less then ideal as it rained the entire 12 hours. Once we arrived we instantly wanted to play a course and played Sugaw Creek which was just a quick drive from our hotel.

    The first course we tackled was Nevin, and while we were meeting up with our friends from Virginia around the practice basket we got to me the man himself, Stan McDaniel. He was in the process of pruning Nevin to really let it shine for worlds. He was such a great person to talk to, he even found us before he left the course to apologize for the course look so awful. That couldn’t be anything farther then the truth! Nevin was an absolute gem, just amazing fairways carved in the woods. Not only was Nevin looking top notch all of the other courses we played were clean, cut, and just begging people to sling Frisbee’s.

    We played 10 courses in 5 days, and we hit the big ones down there, Nevin, Nest, and Renny along with going to Winthrop Gold in SC. All of those courses are easily Championship caliber and then some. My personal favorite was Renny, it’s just gorgeous! Long fairways carved in and out of the woods, great elevation, precarious basket placements, even a spotters tower. The people that are going to be at Worlds this year are going to be in for one heck of an experience. They are going to play some incredible golf on courses that are going to test the Pro’s more then any of the courses of past worlds. I have a feeling the SSA for this worlds is going to come in being one of the toughest worlds. Just looking back at Nevin, Charlotte’s Web layout, and Renny Gold, Pro’s are going to have their work cut out for them. I personally can not wait to watch them destroy the courses that beat me down.

    If anything I’ve learned from my short time down there is, pin placements are amazing, you have to throw forehand, and everyone is so nice down there! Charlotte you are truly a gem, and I’m envious of this years Worlds players!

    First TD Experience

    I ran my first sanctioned event the Sunnybrook Spring Fling over this past weekend, It was a huge success. Last year the event was a one day event accommodating 80 players on a golf course setup for disc golf. Last year the event filled, so I thought I would suggest making it a two day with divisions split to allow more people.  At the time our club has never run a two event like this, so we just just hoping to get 80 total let alone a brand new TD for that matter. Saturday we had 56 players followed by 71 on Sunday  totaling 127 people!!!

    Being a TD requires a lot, and I mean a lot of work! What is more important is the volunteers that help out behind the scenes. Without them there is NO WAY I could of run the tournament as smoothly as it did. We had to basically install and tear down an 18 hole course with fly pads both days! Being a player at heart, I wanted to make sure everyone playing had the best time they could possibly have! Driving around on golf carts sure does make that go easier, and even though a lot, and I mean a lot of people lost plastic to the lake, I never heard anyone saying they didn’t have a great time out there.

    Putting Games 

    Everyone has heard the age old saying, “Drive for show putt for dough”. I follow a more loosely interpreted version of that, ”Drive for show putt for four”.  Everyone wants to become a better putter, and honestly who doesn’t? Putting is easily the most important aspect of the game, it’s also where you can shave the most strokes off of your score.

    I would like to know what everyone else does to help sharping their skills. Do you just play HORSE around a practice basket, or just place yourself around a basket and just putt till your arm’s sore. I’ve found a couple games to help you practice, while making it fun. Twitter user @Inourdr gave me this link http://www.gardencityflyers.org/site/node/427 that uses another points based putting game. Discraft has some outstanding video’s on YouTube that are very beneficial and I recommend them to anyone, especially the putting with confidence video.

     

    Feel free to leave a comment on other games you play while you practice, or suggestions that have helped you and could help others. The only advice that I can offer is start at a comfortable distance where your making everything then slowly work your way back till you hit a trouble spot. Once your at your trouble spot, you know where you need to really hone your practice. Don’t just go out and fire your putters into the basket, make every practice putt as if it’s for the World Championship. If your slow and methodical in practice, then once your staring down that 20′ birdie putt when it counts you will know what to do.

    2012 Bowling Green Amateur Championships 

    This was the second year my Fiancee and my buddy and his wife made the trip from Michigan to Bowling Green, Ky for easily one of the biggest Am tournaments of the year. The weather was absolutely amazing! I don’t know if you could of asked for better weather for the end of March. The temps were in the high 70′s to low 80′s the whole time with the wind only being a slight issue on Friday.

    HB Clark and his team of volunteers go above and beyond to make sure everyone has a great time down there. The courses are always in pristine shape, no litter, graffiti, manicured fairways, and great baskets as well. If you are on the fence on this tournament please come, you won’t regret it! From the players package to the players party at Wha-bah’s Steakhouse’s with the final 9 located on the property. Most people come for the fly mart on Friday night where vendors and people can sell their merchandise. This year Discraft introduced Titanium plastic, which everyone flocked to. Eric McCabe was there to sign the new Titanium Buzzz SS’s as well.

    Most vendors also hosted mini one round C tier tournaments at most of the courses before, as well as some BYOP doubles! Innova also has a longest drive contest that was one by Michigan’s own Tony Mitchell with a throw of 540′. Vibram held a CTP contest using their Ibex mid range for a spot on the test team. Another nice touch down there is if you win your card you receive a special prize. Do yourself a favor and head down next year, you won’t be disappointed!
