    Innova to discontinue the Teebird

Wow…what a bomb to be dropped on the disc golf community. Innova announced that they are no longer producing Teebirds. The Teebird is often associated with a golfers mainstay driver. It was the disc that led Ken Climo to many of his 12 World Championships.

Reasoning behind this drastic move was described as being that it no longer holds a need in a golfers bag. Apparently golfer’s are forgoing its reliable traits for those of longer distance flying discs. Many golfers are opting for the new blizzard plastic or new discs like the Dominator or new Plus Molds.

Touring Pro Andy Hyzer was asked his thoughts on the news and replied, “…This is fantastic news. The Teebird is old and goes 20 feet shorter then all my longer drivers. There really was no need for the disc anymore.” Hyzer also went on to state “…the prototypes of the new Speed 16 discs are flying even farther.”

I dont support this move by Innova at all. The teebird has been my goto driver for 5 years.

What do you thing…let us know your thought!

    Basket with History

The venture started the other night while chatting with a disc golf buddy on Facebook. He asked me how far I was from Glenview, Illinois. I told him about 30 to 45 minutes. He gave me a link to craigslist with a basket for sale. The listing said the basket was from Gilson Park in Wilmette, IL. I messaged another disc golfer who had some history of the course. After some research it’s believed that Wilmette had the first disc catching baskets in the state of Illinois.

I started to think about the historical value of the basket. Did Steady Ed himself make this basket? I discussed this with the club officers of DISContinuum DGC and we decided that we wanted it. I contacted the person in charge of the listing and decided to go meet him. In the mean time I started to get replies to some of my message board posts. It’s believed the course was installed between 1976 to 1977. Everyone is telling me that the course was pulled sometime in the mid 80′s. The park is only a few miles North of Northwestern University and located on Lake Michigan. The course got so popular it could not handle the traffic and was removed.

I was excited pulling into the driveway to pick it up. The basket was planted in the backyard. It sounds crazy but as an avid disc golfer the original Mach 1 looked like a piece of art. The owner told me that basket had been in the same place since the day he purchased it. I didn’t even haggle with the $150 price because it was in excellent condition. After I left I drove over to Gilson Park. It was only a few miles away. It was hard for me to imagine that a 18 hole disc golf course was there.

When I got home a friend of mine posted the photos below. It’s the front and back of a flyer from the 1979 WXRT 4th Annual Frisbee Day. The band UFO played in the park.

    Interview with HyzerBomb

I had the chance to talk to Wes Briscoe earlier this week to find out more about HyzerBomb. Check out what they had to say!

How and why did Hyzer Bomb get started?

Jeremy Glossup and myself (Wes Briscoe) would drive all over Texas and Oklahoma to play tournaments… On these sweet road trips we would talk and dream about one day starting our very own disc golf company. Last fall we stopped dreaming and decided we would jump all in. We purchased all of our screen printing equipment and supplies to launch a full apparel line. Right out the gates we started selecting a sponsor team and spreading the word about Hyzer Bomb. We are only 6 months old and things are really taking off!

But why? – We love disc golf!

What separates Hyzer Bomb from other disc golf companies?

Jeremy and I both are youth pastors, so we wanted a faith based business that put people first. We knew right away we wanted to focus on serving each customer in a Christ loving way. We are not ashamed of that one bit.

How did you guys start making bags?

Well, that was always the end goal – for us make custom bags. We knew apparel would be a great place to get our feet wet while we work on designs for bags. We started drawing up ideas on a bag that would fit us perfect and came out with the Atomic. It was an instant hit and we now have plans to release several other models. Our backpack bag will be releasing in mid April.

What plans does HB have for disc golf in the future?

BIG plans! We are looking to open up a shop in North Texas and run a tournament series from Tulsa to Austin. We are loaded with a great staff! We have everything from great players to professional graphic artist on the team. Look for HB to not only make a splash in 2012, but a tidal wave.
