Since its debut in September, the inbounds Disc Golf inFlight Guide has become the industry standard for viewing disc flight paths. No other disc flight resource comes close to the number of discs or quality of data. Used by both players and manufacturers (including Dynamic Discs and Prodigy Disc), the inFlight Guide has been ranked #1 on the Disc Golf Directory since its launch and is the top ranked disc flight tool using Google’s web search.
What a fantastic day for disc golf! The weather was great and so was the participation in this year’s Girl Scout Disc Golf day! There were 10 young ladies and 2 adults eager to learn how to play this sport.
We began with an introduction myself and the sport. We then grabbed our discs and headed over to the practice basket. When teaching this sport I teach the shots in opposite order that they are thrown. I teach putting first, then approaching, followed by driving. Sometimes we don’t even get to driving. I want a firm foundation set on the putt and approach.
I had the girls surround the basket and step out to about 10 feet away. I demonstrated the proper grip and stance then we all practiced putting for a couple rounds. It didn’t take long for the girls to successfully putt at 10-15 feet away. At this point we marked our easy circle around the basket (15 ft.) and headed to about 60 feet away to work on approaching to our easy circle. We marked our easy circle so that we have a very clear target to aim at when approaching. If you can make it in the circle you have a very good chance at putting out on the first try.
I had the girls line up about 60 feet away from the basket. I demonstrated the grip, the stance and throwing motion of the approach shot. I had each girl throw one at a time so I could help each one specifically. We all threw several times from that point, then we backed up to about 100 feet. After a few rounds the girls were getting more and more shots into the easy circle!
Time to take what we learned from the field and apply it to the course. I split the group up into two and half went with my husband, who taught me how to play disc golf over 18 years ago, and the other half I took. We played ‘best shot’ with the 5 girls on holes 1-4 of Reedy Creek disc golf course. That was a lot of fun and it kept the girls in the fairway most of the time. By the time we got to the third hole the girl’s shots were all quite accurate and several were picking up some good distance.
By the end of the session they were asking me where they can get discs and where else could they play. It is so thrilling for me to see the excitement come to life in a person once they get a good feel for this sport. Several of the girls displayed a natural ability for disc golf and I hope they seek it out further. As always, I love sharing this sport with others! The more youth we can get it now, the stronger this sport will become.

If you want to impress your friends on the disc golf course, it’s all about distance. Owning the best distance drivers will help you to get the results you are looking for.
Based on reviews by disc golfers on InfiniteDiscs.com, we have determined which disc manufacturers make the best distance drivers. Each disc reviewed was rated between one and five stars. One star discs are considered “horrible” while five star discs are “must haves.” All distance drivers with ratings were used to determine the manufacturers overall rating.
According to disc golfers, the best distance drivers are manufactured in Sweden. In fact, three of the top rated brands are all manufactured by Latitude 64.
Find out who the top rated manufacturers of disc golf drivers are here: Which Disc Manufacturer Makes the Best Distance Drivers? | Disc Golf Reviewer.

So when the boys up at the Landfill posted about their Vibram Birdie Bash they also had this Z Tier listed as happening this month. It was a doubles tourney fundraiser for the Harford County Humane Society in memory of one of their locals Tyler who died last year. I didn’t know Tyler but I’m a big animal lover so I figured I’d scrounge up a partner and mosey up for this tourney. I was trying to figure out who to partner with when the idea of El Tie Dye popped into my head. He’s the King of Charity Bowls, so I figured he wouldn’t pass up the chance to participate in this fundraiser. I send him a PM. He replies with:
Let me check with my wife.
The next day I get:
I’m in.
During the days prior to the tourney the Landfill club is promoting the tourney on the local message board, and one day post that they got a big contribution from a type of company you don’t usually find sponsoring a disc tourney:
“Wanted to give a shout out to our major sponsor for Let’s Throw for Tyler Together, Evans Funeral Chapel. In the unfortunate time you may need their services, please give them a visit. Wonderful people to deal with and a big supporter of this event and cause.”
On Thursday and Friday El Tie Dye and I haggle out our getting to the Landfill. El Tie Dye decides to drive to my place and ride up with me. He mentions that he needs to be at the Rockville Unitarian Church by 5:30 since he is a youth group leader there and the kids are having a fundraiser he needs to help oversee. Apparently they are serving mocktails and having some type of casino night.
We decide to arrive a little stupid early since the Landfill locals have posted that in the event the course parking area fills there will be overflow parking nearby, and they will be running a shuttle. Since El Tie Dye is on the clock we decide to be sure to get into the regular parking lot. The locals are expecting a lot of spectators and beginners at this event.
We arrive:

I have participated in several different types of competitive sporting events from road races, triathlons, mountain bike races, ball golf tournaments, tennis tournaments, and finally in disc golf tournaments. In my experience, disc golf events have the highest range of success vs. failure. I have never been in a running event that was run as poorly as some of the worst tournaments I have attended. At the same rate, I have been in disc golf tournaments that have been run with the same professionalism as the San Francisco Marathon. PDGA is in great need of consistency and oversight of its events. The PDGA is trying to address these issues and the True Amateur Initiative is one very big step in the right direction.
The PDGA has several issues to address: Player conduct, event professionalism, and amateurism. I have never competed in any other event where amateurs compete for prizes. Amateurs should compete for trophies, strive for personal accomplishments, and participate for pure enjoyment. Testing oneself in a public arena against other athletes for the joy of personal success and defeating one’s opponent has been enough for me in every other endeavor. So why do I yearn for material gain in disc golf events?
See the rest of my discussion about the True Amateur Initiative and why it is so important for the growth of disc golf and the PDGA here.
When it comes to disc golf in Vermont, we’re not always as blessed with good weather as many of you in other parts of the country. Of course, here there’s plenty of skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, and cross country work to be done, but the kind of precipitation that’s good for those sports isn’t quite as good for our disc golfing.
So, as April rolls around each year, those of us up north really get excited about disc golf weather. And for those of us at Bachnein, we have more than just good weather to look forward to in 2013. We’ve got the first two events in the Green Mountain Point Series looming on the horizon- The Pinnacle Spring Run-Off in Newport, New Hampshire and the Sap Bucket in Waterbury, Vermont. We’ve got a fresh looking website thanks to the outstanding efforts of Taylor Johnson. And we’ve got a few new items to debut in the Bachein 2013 line.
In the next few days you’ll see our new merch on our website and in our store front. For now we can tell you there’s a dri-fit coming in one of your favorite classic designs and some soft, new t-shirts with Bachnein’s newest slogan and a fresh look. Later in the season you’ll see some things to put on your heads and arms along with some things to stick to your water bottles and cars.
2013 looks to be a tremendous year not just in Vermont, but for our growing sport of disc golf in general. Bachnein’s happy to be a part of it. Look for our new stuff in the next few days. In the meantime, Throw Local.
A new disc golf course, cement tee pads, and an enthusiastic membership are only some of what the BDGA has been able to accomplish in a short period of time. Initially it took a few individuals who had the vision to get the local disc golfers to work together to make it happen.
The disc golf club is the basic building block of our sport. It is where the culture is developed, and the club is how many are introduced to the sport. If we want higher pay for our pros, better course design, and less D-Baggery then we have to instill those values and goals at the club level.
Support your local clubs by participating in disc golf as much as possible. Dont forget to bring a friend and remember to have fun!
