I have been filming Disc Golf since 2009 and I have always wanted to catch an ace on film. I have seen several on YouTube and the excitement of watching that plastic hit the chains is awesome. Because it is just me out there filming it is obvious that I can’t be everywhere filming. If I had a nickel for every time someone approached me on the course and told me I missed an awesome putt, or humongous drive, well I wouldn’t be rich, but I’d have some money for gas to get to the next tournament. But I was always able to capture some good footage but the ace had always been my white whale. I have come so close, in fact when I was in North Carolina working with DiscGolfPlanettv I almost caught Sarah Hokum getting an ace but I had hit the recording button because it did not look like it was going to get close to the basket and I could not really see the basket. I have had people get an ace on a hole that was the hole I had just left to film a different hole.

So how do you catch an ace on film?

Pick easy holes. It does help to hang out with your camera at holes that are easy to ace. But, I have done just that. In fact early on in my Disc Golf video career filmed a couple $10k Hole In One challenges and nothing.

Give an incentive so people will go for it

In 2011 I traveled to several Dynamic Discs events and announced a $100 Ace Bounty at each player’s meeting. If I caught them getting an ace on film I would hand them a $100 bill. I never had the opportunity to pay anyone.

Have someone keep throwing at a hole until they get it

I am not sure I would count this one as something to get excited over. In fact I have heard people say that unless you made an ace on your first throw of a hole then you shouldn’t even count it. I think that is a bit harsh.

Preserverance and more perseverance

This is what made it happen for me. In May of 2013 I was filming the Monkey Island Open for Dynamic Discs and on the second round I decided to follow the lead card for the last 5 holes. On hole 17 there is a park bench right behind the tee pad that allowed me to get a good angle. And that is where it happend. Benjamin Wiggins through that disc right into the basket. When he threw I knew the line looked good but as the disc got closer and closer it was almost as if it started to slow down as my thoughts started to suggest that this thing might go right into the basket. The other guys on the card started the usually chatter, “It’s going in”, “One time, one time”. And then just as effortlessly as it could be the disc connected with the chains and felt to the cage waiting below.

Everyone cheered and after listening t the footage while editing I wonder if I yelled in excitement louder than Benjamin. It was so cool to capture that moment on video.

Here is the tournament highlights from the 2013 Monkey Island Open. You can watch all 14 minutes or you can skip to the footage of the ace.

We are proud to introduce our two latest disc models: The P3 and the MD3. The P3 is somewhat of a hybrid between a putter and a midrange, a stable and dependable flyer that cuts through the wind and fades reliably to the basket. The P3?s best weapon is it’s versatility – it’s an awesome flyer off the tee and a great disc for putting too. For the fans of fade-in putters out there this disc is a must try.

Reinventing the stamp design

For this release we also really wanted to hear out what our fans had to say about the stamp design. Many of you guys have been requesting us to run the minimal and simplistic type of stamp we used to do back when we got started. For P3 we re-designed the D-line stamp and skipped the extra name we’ve used in most of our latest models. The disc itself is currently available with two stamps: The regular production stamp is available throughout Europe and theDiscmania First Run stamp is the one currently available in the US.

Retooling for premium plastics

This first release of the D-P3 comes with sort of a prototype configuration.

Check out this new invention. “The Folf Club“

Click here to view the embedded video.

Essentially, it’s a stick that uses leverage to help you fling disc golf discs with minimal effort. When I saw it, my initial thought was that it would be pretty difficult to actually throw discs accurately using this thing, but it is definitely something I want to try out.

When I was a kid I had a toy for launching snow balls. It was a stick with a cup at the end. Put a snow ball in the cup, swing the stick, and watch the snow ball fly farther than I could ordinarily throw. It was a lot of fun throwing snow balls with this thing, but for actual snow ball fights, it just wasn’t very accurate — especially for short range throws. I imagine flinging discs with the Folf Club will be pretty similar.

If the Folf Club actually is easy to use, then this could help take the sport to a new level.

Half the fun of disc golf is watching discs fly, and fly, and fly. If you can make a golf disc fly farther, why not?

If you want to see the Folf Club become a reality, here’s more details about how to help fund the project.

Hi Greg
Does Hawk have a passport and a kilt?
I carry a high Vibram NutSac percentage
We open in a few weeks, ReBoot Disc Golf Course @Foxlake, Dunbar, Scotland.
Peace

Seamus Scanlon

Now we all get our fair share of spam, however this one didn’t actually mention a Nigerian prince and a wire transfer of funds. Once Greg forwarded the email to me I was intrigued by such an invitation from the homeland, and needed to know more about Seamus.

Meet Seamus Scanlon…

May of 2013 looks to be an exciting month for Bachnein. If you’ve seen us in person, you know we have a few new items this season. If you know us through Instagram or Twitter, than you may just be finding out about our new Dri Fit shirt and the Throw Local t-shirts.

In just about a week, Bachnein will be at the Sap Bucket Open in Waterbury, Vermont. If you’re not familiar with the Sap Bucket, it’s notable for a few reasons. Not only do you get some classic northern New England disc golf, but it happens to be brought to you by the Alchemist Brewery, maker of Beer Advocate’s Top Beer, Heady Topper. As if that’s not enough, the Sap Bucket is part of the Green Mountain Point Series, which is sponsored by Three Penny Taproom, a beer bar rated as World Class by Beer Advocate and the always fabulous and super authentic Mad Taco.

What we’re trying to say is that Bachnein is happy to be a part of it.

Later in the month we’ll make an appearance in far northern Vermont at the very cool Black Falls in Montgomery, Vermont. If you’re looking for a reason to come visit our fair state, check out what they have to offer. Disc Golf Course Review happens to rate the course a very impressive 4.61. Plus, it’s a course that’s gotten much nicer in the past 12 months. Some come check it out.

In the meantime, Throw Local.

I played the Auburn Am recently and had a really good time. I scored the best round of golf so far at 9 under par. I had been 9 under once before at the same course but this was by far my strongest showing at an event. I did not perform as well for the rest of the event – I was surprised how well I did in the first round and tried a little too hard to match it. Time to have two really good rounds in one event.

I really like the events hosted by the Chain Zombies in Auburn, Ca. They almost always start on time. The players meetings are no nonsense and concise. They have well organized side events like CTP’s and mini-disc-golf – though I don’t personally play them. They almost always provide lunch and this year the sandwiches were delicious and exactly what I needed. They had a couple beer options for breaks – I had one but kind of wish I hadn’t as I lost some focus and energy.

The only complaint I have is that they allowed in too many players and had two ghost groups. I can’t recall the Zombies having this all too common problem before but it was a bit of a drag. My worst hole was 16, round three, when I hit the earliest tree, careened off another tree, and got buried in thorny brambles. I had to take an unplayable lie and re-tee. I had waited at least 20 minutes to tee. There were at least 15 golfers and their caddies watching my fumble. I’m not saying the wait caused the fumble but having an audience at that moment was unpleasant.

The wait did give me a few moments to think about the topic of this blog and the opportunity to ask some of my fellow competitors what they thought about having or being a caddie. I had been thinking about this since the Master’s Cup a few weeks prior, largely because of a comment my buddy Armando made, “I’ve decided I just can’t play with a caddie.” Here are Armando’s Pros and Cons of having a caddie from the Master’s Cup Amateur Weekend in Santa Cruz:

Pros:

You are less fatigued at the end of the day but this can also be remedied if you push a cart. In my case, I only carry 16 discs, which isn’t a lot, but my energy levels were much higher at the end of days 1 & 2. Caddies can provide words of encouragement, tips, suggestions, or even help you stay loose by talking about something else. This was evident with my Dad trying to cheer me up when things headed south. He urged me to be aggressive which cost me some strokes but also gained me some as well.

See the rest of Armando’s Pros and Cons with some further thought on having and being a caddie here.
