Saturday: The Big Screens GPS really proves it’s worth this morning. I’ve always driven one way from Maryland to Pennsylvania to get to Codorus. There is another “Westminster Way” to go that I’m not as familiar with. Then there is the “Early Exit Off 83? way that Dick and I tried to follow No Spin home on years ago and we lost him and got lost ourselves. I figured the GPS would tell me the Westminster Way, but instead it ran me up the Early Exit way and shaved 15 minutes off my run. I was suitably impressed.

I arrive 5 minutes after registration opens. There is already a Line of Shame forming:

Lots of things are changing for me and DB Free Disc Golf; I need some help keeping up the momentum. A number of people have helped me get this started and keep it going so from one of my biggest supporters, contributors, and friends Armando Lopez Jr., El Capitan, #45792:

Change is sometimes difficult to deal with especially when it comes to any technical sport such as disc golf. It often disrupts your rhythm and flow. It can make you change your approach which can be awkward or uncomfortable. For example, the wind picks up so instead of your preferred anhyzer you must throw a really over-stable hyzer.

But sometimes change is needed when things are just not going your way. Your putting is not on mark so you change your stance. You keep flipping your driver so you move to something more stable. Yet, those are the little changes we can make easily. We are frequently prepared to make this type of change but what about changing every disc in your bag and starting over? Yeah that’s what I did. Ever wonder how they get such fantastic aerial footage of the race at the Daytona 500? They utilize a radio controlled drone copter carrying a digital camera similar to the one show in this WIRED article. The drone is flown remotely and places the camera in a fantastic vantage point and the result is great sports videography. It’s about time someone got some aerial footage for disc golf using one of the affordable, high quality Radio Controlled (or RC) drone, or UAV, rigs .

So Sunday I returned to the thrill that is Association “competition” by jumping back in the pool with the Advanced Masters…which is the rare double oxymoron as the field is never Advanced caliber and mastery is sketchy at best. In looking over the pre registered players I saw two none members, one guy rated 20 points below me and Frank G. whose rating was close to mine. I checked out his player profile and Frank has 28 Association “amateur” titles! 19 of which were of the aforementioned inaccurately named Advanced Masters flavor. Who is this guy? I figure he’s the guy to beat. In one of my weird pre tourney habits I washed off my discs Thursday evening.

When I started playing over a decade ago (back when I cared) I read some piece somewhere that listed out what the new tourney player should do in preparation for an event. There were about 97 tasks detailed. Years later my general indifference, and seasoned veteran experience, has enabled me to reduce that list to about three things. One of them is washing my discs. It’s probably because I’m a neat freak. I don’t know anyone else who does this. There is probably a support group that meets once a week in church basements. Saturday morning I roll up to Pennsylvania. The Big Screens GPS amuses me when it pronounces Towson as Toe Son and the ramp onto the beltway (the sign reads York PA) as Yorkpa. Dick and I agreed to meet at Seneca today to practice for the Maryland Team Matchplay event coming up on the 22nd. We’ve put together the Nomads as a team again this year. If memory serves me correctly; In the first and second year of MTM I captained our team and we lost in the semi-finals and finals. In the third year drama ensued when I didn’t pick George after his return from his broken leg, and then Dick thought he would be better as the three seed than me so I bailed and they lost in the morning round. That made me giggle. This year I told Dick I would play but he’d have to be the captain. The basic concept is five players per team whose combined ratings must total less than 4600. It’s 27 holes in the morning where cards of four go out and your card is made up of three other teams seed matching yours. You play nine holes of match play against each of the other three on your card. The teams who win their divisions play off in the afternoon. I got Dick, me and Shawn. Dick recruited JPro and Michelle. Surprisingly based on ratings used by El Tie Dye (event TD) Dick is our #3 seed and I’m our #4. I giggled at the irony of this.

I arrive exactly at the agreed upon time. Dick arrives only about 10 minutes late. I warm up some putting to kill time:

This video comes from Rooster Walk Music and Arts Festival at Blue Mountain Festival Grounds in Martinsville, VA on May 24-26, 2013. The Big Idea for The Mobile Disc Golf Experience by Explore Disc Golf was to have a beginner-friendly, yet technically challenging 3-hole course that was highly visible from both stages and the campgrounds.

The 3-hole layout of the disc golf course at Blue Mountain Festival Grounds took advantage of the rolling hillside and steep slopes to provide players with a 3-hole course that demanded a variety of different shots from the wide range of skill levels playing the course. Overall, The Mobile Disc Golf Experience was a huge success — seeing hundreds of users of the weekend both on the course and in the portable baskets in the concert grounds — as we have been asked to come back in 2014.
