What a fantastic day for disc golf! The weather was great and so was the participation in this year’s Girl Scout Disc Golf day! There were 10 young ladies and 2 adults eager to learn how to play this sport.

We began with an introduction myself and the sport. We then grabbed our discs and headed over to the practice basket. When teaching this sport I teach the shots in opposite order that they are thrown. I teach putting first, then approaching, followed by driving. Sometimes we don’t even get to driving. I want a firm foundation set on the putt and approach.

I had the girls surround the basket and step out to about 10 feet away. I demonstrated the proper grip and stance then we all practiced putting for a couple rounds. It didn’t take long for the girls to successfully putt at 10-15 feet away. At this point we marked our easy circle around the basket (15 ft.) and headed to about 60 feet away to work on approaching to our easy circle. We marked our easy circle so that we have a very clear target to aim at when approaching. If you can make it in the circle you have a very good chance at putting out on the first try.

I had the girls line up about 60 feet away from the basket. I demonstrated the grip, the stance and throwing motion of the approach shot. I had each girl throw one at a time so I could help each one specifically. We all threw several times from that point, then we backed up to about 100 feet. After a few rounds the girls were getting more and more shots into the easy circle!

Time to take what we learned from the field and apply it to the course. I split the group up into two and half went with my husband, who taught me how to play disc golf over 18 years ago, and the other half I took. We played ‘best shot’ with the 5 girls on holes 1-4 of Reedy Creek disc golf course. That was a lot of fun and it kept the girls in the fairway most of the time. By the time we got to the third hole the girl’s shots were all quite accurate and several were picking up some good distance.

By the end of the session they were asking me where they can get discs and where else could they play. It is so thrilling for me to see the excitement come to life in a person once they get a good feel for this sport. Several of the girls displayed a natural ability for disc golf and I hope they seek it out further. As always, I love sharing this sport with others! The more youth we can get it now, the stronger this sport will become.

Owning the best distance drivers will help you to get the results you are looking for.

Based on reviews by disc golfers on InfiniteDiscs.com, we have determined which disc manufacturers make the best distance drivers. Each disc reviewed was rated between one and five stars. One star discs are considered “horrible” while five star discs are “must haves.” All distance drivers with ratings were used to determine the manufacturers overall rating.

According to disc golfers, the best distance drivers are manufactured in Sweden. In fact, three of the top rated brands are all manufactured by Latitude 64.

I have been filming Disc Golf since 2009 and I have always wanted to catch an ace on film. I have seen several on YouTube and the excitement of watching that plastic hit the chains is awesome. Because it is just me out there filming it is obvious that I can’t be everywhere filming. If I had a nickel for every time someone approached me on the course and told me I missed an awesome putt, or humongous drive, well I wouldn’t be rich, but I’d have some money for gas to get to the next tournament. But I was always able to capture some good footage but the ace had always been my white whale. I have come so close, in fact when I was in North Carolina working with DiscGolfPlanettv I almost caught Sarah Hokum getting an ace but I had hit the recording button because it did not look like it was going to get close to the basket and I could not really see the basket. I have had people get an ace on a hole that was the hole I had just left to film a different hole.

So how do you catch an ace on film?

Pick easy holes. It does help to hang out with your camera at holes that are easy to ace. But, I have done just that. In fact early on in my Disc Golf video career filmed a couple $10k Hole In One challenges and nothing.

Give an incentive so people will go for it

In 2011 I traveled to several Dynamic Discs events and announced a $100 Ace Bounty at each player’s meeting. If I caught them getting an ace on film I would hand them a $100 bill. I never had the opportunity to pay anyone.

Have someone keep throwing at a hole until they get it

I am not sure I would count this one as something to get excited over. In fact I have heard people say that unless you made an ace on your first throw of a hole then you shouldn’t even count it. I think that is a bit harsh.

Preserverance and more perseverance

This is what made it happen for me. In May of 2013 I was filming the Monkey Island Open for Dynamic Discs and on the second round I decided to follow the lead card for the last 5 holes. On hole 17 there is a park bench right behind the tee pad that allowed me to get a good angle. And that is where it happend. Benjamin Wiggins through that disc right into the basket. When he threw I knew the line looked good but as the disc got closer and closer it was almost as if it started to slow down as my thoughts started to suggest that this thing might go right into the basket. The other guys on the card started the usually chatter, “It’s going in”, “One time, one time”. And then just as effortlessly as it could be the disc connected with the chains and felt to the cage waiting below.

Everyone cheered and after listening t the footage while editing I wonder if I yelled in excitement louder than Benjamin. It was so cool to capture that moment on video.

Here is the tournament highlights from the 2013 Monkey Island Open. You can watch all 14 minutes or you can skip to the footage of the ace.

We are proud to introduce our two latest disc models: The P3 and the MD3. The P3 is somewhat of a hybrid between a putter and a midrange, a stable and dependable flyer that cuts through the wind and fades reliably to the basket. The P3?s best weapon is it’s versatility – it’s an awesome flyer off the tee and a great disc for putting too. For the fans of fade-in putters out there this disc is a must try.

Reinventing the stamp design

For this release we also really wanted to hear out what our fans had to say about the stamp design. Many of you guys have been requesting us to run the minimal and simplistic type of stamp we used to do back when we got started. For P3 we re-designed the D-line stamp and skipped the extra name we’ve used in most of our latest models. The disc itself is currently available with two stamps: The regular production stamp is available throughout Europe and theDiscmania First Run stamp is the one currently available in the US.

Retooling for premium plastics

This first release of the D-P3 comes with sort of a prototype configuration.

The SpinTV will offer its viewers a weekly dose of Disc Golf goodness in the form of state-of-the-art videos. But quite frankly, the SpinTV is much more than that.

“The SpinTV is what the sport of Disc Golf has been lacking. The sport itself is wonderful in many aspects, but we need find ways to promote it so that it’s credible to the mainstream media. We wanted to develop the pinnacle Disc Golf medium out there and I think we’ve done a good job doing so. If you have a friend who doesn’t know anything about Disc Golf, this is the site you should show him.”

Check out this new invention. “The Folf Club“

Click here to view the embedded video.

Essentially, it’s a stick that uses leverage to help you fling disc golf discs with minimal effort. When I saw it, my initial thought was that it would be pretty difficult to actually throw discs accurately using this thing, but it is definitely something I want to try out.

When I was a kid I had a toy for launching snow balls. It was a stick with a cup at the end. Put a snow ball in the cup, swing the stick, and watch the snow ball fly farther than I could ordinarily throw. It was a lot of fun throwing snow balls with this thing, but for actual snow ball fights, it just wasn’t very accurate — especially for short range throws. I imagine flinging discs with the Folf Club will be pretty similar.

If the Folf Club actually is easy to use, then this could help take the sport to a new level.

Half the fun of disc golf is watching discs fly, and fly, and fly. If you can make a golf disc fly farther, why not?

If you want to see the Folf Club become a reality, here’s more details about how to help fund the project.
